HELP DISABLED CHILDREN HELP THEMSELVES

The Centre for Rehabilitation of the Disabled (Formerly Home for Handicapped [Polio] Children) was founded in 1974 with the aim of total rehabilitation of its children through physiotherapy, corrective surgery, vocational guidance, general education, computer education and training in various vocational trades. The children come from all communities, but they have one thing in common: they all come from poor families. Since 1974 hundreds of children have left the Home to make their way in the world, as government employees, tailors, watch repairers, mechanics, bankers - even entrepreneurs. The Home has an international reputation and is known as one of the most outstanding of its kind for the total rehabilitation of the orthopaedically disabled.

Our mission is not just to give education and to cater for their special needs, but also to provide a warm and loving ambience at the Home. This we do with the help of our many friends and volunteers; even the staff accept very low salaries because they feel compensated by the love they receive from the children and their colleagues. We now have 196 boys and girls from the ages of five to seventeen; some children are victims of polio, others have cerebral palsy. The Home is 60% funded by the Churches Council of South India for Child & Youth (CCCYC) with help from the German charity Kindernothilfe (KNH). The rest of the money, approximately Rs. 1 lakh per month, we have to raise ourselves.

Can you help? Yes, you can. You can sponsor or co-sponsor a child. For just Rs. 950 per month you can give a child security and the promise of a fine future. In return you will receive letters from the child, reports on his or her progress, and most of all, the pure love of a child.

You can help purchase callipers. A set of callipers and crutches cost Rs. 3,000; they are made in our non-profit orthopaedic workshop and there are 50 poor ex-foster children who are waiting for them.

You can pledge a small amount by monthly bankers order for one year and if at the end of that year you are satisfied by what we are doing with your money, you can renew the bankers order for a further one year. You can include a legacy in your Last Will and Testament. You can make a donation, however large or small, for any specific purpose - for toys, for medical assistance, for books, for educational excursions, for clothes, for toiletries - in short, for anything you are interested in. Or you can donate something for general use. Either way you can be sure the children will directly benefit and your wishes for the use of the money will be firmly respected.

In every case, receipts will be issued to the donor. Please send a donation to: The Director, Centre for Rehabilitation of the Disabled LMS Compound, Palayam Trivandrum-695 033 Kerala, South India.
